My mom was always the green thumb in my family, but since the pandemic, I’ve branched out my hobbies to gardening - mostly container gardening since we don’t have much in the way of ground space in our yard in Honolulu.

As a newbie, I learned so much from other home gardeners a Facebook group called 808 Green Thumbs and later through volunteering with plant and seed sharing projects that are part of the Eating in Public initiative.

Based on the increasing membership of the Facebook group and related events, the gardening scene in Honolulu has just exploded. There’s a Facebook group dedicated to the growing number of Oahu Plant Share Events, and O’ahu Master Gardener workshops are selling out quickly.

There’s so much information from different organizations that it’s been hard to keep track of the opportunities to learn and network with other home gardeners. So, I decided to collect all that info into a hub that folks could easily access 24/7 - and MJR in the Garden was born.

This offshoot of My Jungle Rules focuses on gardening events, news, tips and more in Hawaii for now, but will expand. There are three ways home gardeners can get MJR in the Garden content:

  • Website: Here you’ll find the schedules of events including plant shares, tours, workshops, community workdays, festivals and more. There’s even a Google calendar showing you the plethora of events every month. The website also features the latest blog posts, as well as posts dedicated to tips and recipes.

  • Newsletter: By signing up for the newsletter, subscribers will receive the latest posts in their inbox immediately, without having to check the website. The newsletter will also offer exclusive content including special offers and giveaways.

  • Facebook: Like and Follow our page, which will feature content from the website, invite followers to provide their feedback on gardening issues, and social-only contests and giveaways.

I look forward to seeing you at MJR in the Garden!
