Known for his colorful, large-scale abstract art pieces that have graced galleries around the world, Guam-based artist Mark Dell’Isola’s describes his latest canvases as "crazy techno paintings," blending geometric patterns and digital motifs with the organic, natural beauty of the Pacific.
His newest canvases, some as large as 7 by 12 feet, are a study in parallel lines and circuit board-like designs. As with all his work, he draws inspiration from his environment, whether it’s the reefs of Palau while diving or a sign with a giant QR code while driving.

“My new work now is based on technology and circuitry,” he said during a video interview at this studio at Sagan Kotturan CHamoru at Ypao Point. To create these intricate pieces, he begins with an acrylic base, followed by an oil enamel layer for the dark, black areas — a process that requires him to wear a mask and gloves. The canvases are so large they must be worked on while laid out on the floor, then masked before being moved to the wall for him to fill in the colored lines with oil paints.
The finished result is a fusion of manmade and natural, where the precision of a circuit board is softened by a palette that captures some of the "million different shades of the color of the water" found in the Pacific.
Once the series is complete, they will replace his current exhibit at the Hyatt Regency Guam, which has provided their entrance area with large, high-ceilinged walls to display his work. The location has proven highly effective, drawing more traffic and sales than a traditional gallery, and the arrangement works for the hotel, as tourists and locals get to see his latest creations.
Mark Dell’Isola’s latest exhibit at the Hyatt Regency Guam opened March 22, 2025, featuring some of his artworks from 2024-25.
The Hyatt Regency is currently his most prominent exhibition space since several of his galleries in Germany, Houston and Washington, D.C., have closed. “It’s a tough business but that’s how you show your work. I’ve been taking my work to the Miami area — I’ve been able to sell there because houses there have high ceilings” where his expansive paintings can be shown to their best advantage.
After stints living in Bali, Palau and Japan and traveling around the world for his exhibits, Dell’Isola has been creating for more than a decade at Sagan Kotturan as the artist in residence. He spends 8 to 10 hours a day in his studio, which is open to the public.
“Life here is easy and good, … I don’t want to live any other place,” he said.

Mark Dell’Isola, artist in residence at Sagan Kotturan CHamoru at Ypao Point, is shown in his studio May 6, 2025.
Looking ahead, Mark hopes to put together a major, 40-year retrospective at the Guam Museum next year to showcase the work of a CHamoru artist whose art can be found in the permanent collections the Palau National Museum, IberCaja Cultural Center in Spain, and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
The sheer scale of his art presents a unique challenge, however, as he has more than 100 large canvases rolled up, some as big as 9 by 15 feet, in his portfolio. To solve the issue of framing such massive pieces, he envisions stapling the unstretched canvases directly to the wall, creating a tapestry-like effect. It would be a fitting and personal way to display a lifetime of work on the island he calls home.
