Driving to Ashburn this weekend, we stopped by the EatLoco Farmers Market at Ashbrook and stumbled on something that took us home to Guam in a hot minute.
Full disclosure: That “stumble” was intentional. We actually made the 30-minute drive to Ashburn because we heard a little piece of Guam had landed on the East Coast.
671° Pacific Flame and Grill — owned by Darryl and Melissa “Yamanaka” Fejerang — made its grand opening debut with all the right smells: grilled chicken and short ribs drifting through the air. Their menu for the day was everything a fiesta plate should be: red rice, lumpia, chorizos pak pak, grilled chicken and short ribs, mac salad, and a little cup of latiya. Hello!
The couple is testing out a pop-up for now, though most of their work has been in catering. For those of us in the Guam diaspora in Virginia, seeing their booth felt like a warm welcome.
They plan to be at the market for a few more weekends as they test the waters. Therese Padua Howe — our unofficial official chaser of off-island Guam eateries — will be spending time with them for an interview soon. Consider this your teaser and an invitation for East Coasters to check them out.
As with any Guam experience, picking up plate lunches island-style was a treat, but the real joy was spending time with Darrell and Melissa, hearing about their new venture, and discovering all the ways we were connected.
